An Eye for Music: Popular Music and The Audiovisual Surreal
http://www.oup.com/us/catalog/general/subject/Music/PopularMusic/PopRockPopularCulture/?view=usa&ci=9780195367362

This book investigates recent audiovisual tendencies that resemble those found in historical surrealism, including independent cinema, performances of popular music, cinematic opera, and Internet practices. Neosurrealism is theorized as a cluster of loosely related practices more than a single determining code. In addition to surrealism, case studies are interpreted with reference to writing on digital technology, affect theory, ideas about cultural identity, and the proliferation of practices in the information age. In this presentation, I introduce two of the book’s central concepts, reparative reading and cultural memory, with a view to elucidating its aims and findings.

Susanna Paasonen (Professor of Media Studies, University of Turku):
Carnal Resonance: Affect and Online Pornography
http://mitpress.mit.edu/catalog/item/default.asp?ttype=2&tid=12725

Pornography has been conceptualized as a body genre for two decades yet theorizations of its force and fleshy modality have been few and far between. Taking up the challenge, Carnal Resonance explores the impact of digital media production, distribution and consumption on the genre of porn, the particularities of and materialities of digital imaging as well as the analytical possibilities of affect theory in unraveling the modalities of porn and the intensities that it evokes. In this presentation, I introduce the notion of resonance in order to explain the rationale of the book.

The author presentations are followed by snacks and refreshments. Welcome!
